IIIT-H to focus on Research – Rediff

Consider this: In the field of computer science, electronics and communications and related subjects, the US produces 600 PhDs every year.

In contrast, China’s doctoral output in related subjects is a mind-boggling 3,000. And India’s annual output in these disciplines is 75 or even less.

All the universities in the country, Indian Institutes of Technology, NITs and CSIR laboratories together produce only this much. As part of an effort to bridge this gap between the PhD-holder pools of India and countries like the US and China, the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, proposes to produce about 100 PhDs by 2012 against 15 today.

Quick $HOME-backup setup

OS: Linux, Tool: rsync

Problem: To setup .snapshot style rotating backup of your $HOME folder say in another partition or system
Solution: Write a few shell scripts to use rsync for fast-backup and the rotate them for daily, weekly and monthly backups. Rsync only copies modified files and use ‘cp -al’ to create hard-links. Configure cron to run these scripts.

Deployment Time: 10 mins [with scripts below]

Quick setup with my script:

  • Save the script below as executable ‘daily_snapshot’ in $HOME/bin.
  • Edit SRC , DIR variables in this script
  • Run ‘crontab -e’ and paste the entries below

Foxit – PDF Viewer

Foxit PDF Reader is the solution to all those who cant live with the bloated Acrobat Reader (plugin). Somehow, FireFox and Acrobat plugin dont do a good job together. Foxit is really a fast and simple PDF viewer for Windows. I recommend Foxit for fast previews. For everything else, there is Acrobat of course.

Firefox 1.5 Session Saver Extension That Works

Finally a working version of the Session Saver extension for Firefox 1.5 final. Session Saver allows you to exit out of Firefox and then start again whenever you like exactly the way you left it, tabs and all. This is definately a must have extension!
